I grow an heirloom vegetable and flower garden in St. Paul, Minnesota. The following are tasks I’ve already completed, or they are in the future and don’t require knowledge about when to put transplants outdoors (which I will write more about later).
- January 1: Order heirloom plant seeds from Seed Savers Exchange and Baker Creek. Order heirloom onion starts from Renee’s Garden.
- January: Look into, purchase, and install a new grow light system.February: Purchase starter soil and plant markers.
- February 24: Label plant makers.
- March 9: put soil into seedling pots.
- March 16: the anticipated indoor start date for planting tomato and pepper transplants.
- April 6: put soil into seedling pots.
- April 13: the anticipated indoor start date for planting amaranth, sunflowers, summer and winter squash, basil and Orange Flame Marigolds.
As you can see, today, I labeled plant markers. During the cold weather months, I try to do something garden-related each week. In the fall, that usually means cleaning out and disinfecting seedling pots, looking at seed catalogs, and coming up with draft garden sketches. In the winter months, I order supplies and label plant markers. In the late winter to early spring start growing seedlings indoors.
